What is repeating content? It’s basically another page on your site, (internal repeating content) or on another site (external repeating content). Repeating content is bad because Google and other search engines, treat the repeating content with contempt! Any repeating content is particularly targeted by Google’s robots, indexing your site, displaying the following message: “Search Results Omitted”. The short of it is that instead of getting two or more rankings on one page, you have one. Less presence. So how do you know if you have duplicate content? Look for warnings in Google Webmaster. Google Webmaster is a free service that gives you an inside view into how Google sees your website. Google Webmaster will tell you if you are being penalised for duplicate content. Alternatively, use http://www.copyscape.com to check you site for external sites, copying your content. Obviously, you need to write your own copy, for your own benefit. In the early days of the internet, welcome pages were as popular as the Spice Girls. What’s a welcome page? It’s a page with little content except for a “welcome to our site” message, an image and a few buttons to click on to give you access to the site. Big companies (like Coca Cola and Nike) didn’t really need to be visible in Google – people knew where to find them. Welcome pages are bad for SEO, and bad for your Google ranking, and they annoy people. Why would you make time poor people have to work to find the information they are looking for? It makes no sense to me, and more importantly it makes life hard for the Google robots crawling your site. Don’t do it. An idea can change your life. Sometimes a problem needs to be reversed in order for a solution to present itself… Stuck on ideas for a problem? After trying to solve it and getting stuck: How would you go about doing the opposite? How would you oppose someone trying to fix your problem? Say you want to get people to sign up for your company newsletter, and they’re not. You’ve tried working out a solution and you’re stuck. If you ask a different question, you may get closer to the answer. Why not ask instead, “why would people want to leave my list” or “how can I stop people signing up to my list”, or “how do I make my list undesirable”. This can get you out of your old way of thinking and into a new one. Maybe the solution is making your list exclusive, so that not everyone can join. Create some urgency to join. Or you could suddenly discover that there are some undesirable elements in your sign up, or positioning of your list already there, that will help you make a change. An idea can change the world. I get asked a lot, “why did you choose to focus on creativity and marketing?”. Creativity has many uses outside of the stereotypical ones, and believe it or not, you can learn to be creative. It is not just for those of us with a love of drawing or writing (and caffeine) and are called ‘designers’ or ‘creatives’. It may surprise you to know that creativity is a skill anyone can learn, and there are some great benefits. Take me for example, I’m not a natural at being creative. Sure, the caffeine addiction come easily enough, but creativity is something I’ve had to work at, study, learn and in some ways, that has given me insight in how to grow creatively. I wasn’t born with an amazing gift like some, and at the end of it all, I’m glad. Marketing is communication with the purpose of selling your product or service. Creative marketing is therefore creative communication to your market, and if you want to stand out from the crowd, you need ideas. Creativity is the incubator from which ideas are born. Creativity doesn’t just end in marketing messages, or drawings, but in business ideas, problem solving and innovation. Its applications are endless. So don’t believe the lie that you aren’t creative. Websites and in particular, blog sites,  need photography to make them ‘pop’, and attract readers. Photos can be expensive to buy from stock photo sites – so here are some free options: ONE: www.sxc.hu Stock xchng has been a mainstay for my free stock photo supplies for years. Just check the usage restrictions before you go downloading images: sometimes you might have to credit the owner. You will need to create a free account and login to download full resolution images. TWO: www.morguefile.com Sometimes morguefile has some great images, but it’s a good place to go keep in your favourites to have a look. You never know! THREE: Flickr Creative Commons Technically, this isn’t a stock photo website, but the images are free. Make sure that you read the restrictions on image use before you go browsing for photos. Some require attribution (at the bottom of your post, credit the author and link to their Flickr page) Some will not allow you to use photos to sell a product, or others to alter their images in any way. Attributing Ownership of photos There are a couple of ways to do this. But the easiest way is to simply add some text and a link at the bottom of your blog post. (see below). You and everybody else wants to be up the top of the Google pyramid.This calls for search engine optimization. (or SEO) Generally, people create their website and are disappointed when it’s not on the first page of the search engine results. This is understandable, but a quality ranking takes time to build. Here are five great tips to get you started: ONE: Decide on your keywords This is huge. You can’t hit be in the top 10 for every keyword search on the internet, so choose a few. Using Google Trends you can compare searches to work out what are the most popular keywords searched for regarding your product or service. You might not always go for the more popular one (there will be more competition) but it helps when deciding. Ultimately, ask yourself; “what would I be searching for to find my product?”. Think about problems that your service or product can help fix, similar products or services (interior decoration > interior design) and the types of searches your target audience would make – perhaps not even looking for you. If you sell kids boutique clothing, think about other items that affluent mums would search for. TWO: Use your keywords throughout your site Once you have your keywords (no more than 5 to begin with) include them in the text and titles of your blog posts, the tags and categories of your blog site and the meta tags of your site. Use alt tags on your images (these appear when you hover over your image) – but make it relevant and don’t repeat them unnecessarily or Google will demote you rather than promote. THREE: Blog There is no better way for Google to ‘up’ your site on it’s scales than by blogging regularly about your products/services and industry. You can focus a post on a different keyword to maximise the exposure Google will give it. But don’t annoy your audience, add value to them. Give them tips and tricks, not marketing messages and offers. FOUR: Links pointing to your site (Backlinks) Google rewards websites that are well connected. So be involved in community sites that are relevant to your product or service. Generally these places don’t like being taken advantage of for self promotion, so be careful you don’t annoy prospective clients in the process! Link to those posts in return, to maximise Google’s attention to them.
